Small babies

Just got back from seeing my other Dr. She thinks the babies are small. I knew something was wrong at that US. She suggested resting more and eating more. Eat as much as possible as frequently as possible.

Of course I am in a total tailspin. Is it going to end now? Am I going to lose my babies? I am so scared right now. I have to get these kids to grow more. Please don't let this be the beginning of the end. Please. Let them be ok.

  1. Dear, dear EB -- I'm sorry. Any surprises this late make for completely crappy days. If it’s any comfort, Liam was a small baby too – on my last few maternity appointments the doc kept telling me he thought he was a “pretty small baby” and I should eat more. He was less than 6.5 pounds when born and less than 6 pounds when he left the hospital (they always lose weight those first few days). He was small, but he was totally healthy. And he stayed totally healthy, and became completely average size once he started growing. He’s above average height. Small and healthy is still healthy. Eat and rest is good advice at any point when one is growing two babies, I’m sure. I hope you can take it easy and not worry too much once you get used to this new information from your funny, goofy doc. From what you’ve said, if she thought there was any real concern about the babies she’d be all over your ass. With love,
    Elizabeth

  2. I like Elizabeth's comment. She's right -- if your doc thought the babies were in danger, she'd put you in the hospital and monitor those monkeys 24/7. So maybe the babies are small maybe, but if they are healthy, they'll gain weight and be just fine. I think this is the perfect excuse to STOP WORKING and just lie back and eat some pasta and steak and Thai food and ice cream and....

    Thinking of you.

  3. EB - If your babies measured in the 50th%-tile on Tuesday, and they gain the 1oz per day that twins do in the third trimester, at 36wks they will be 5lb7oz and 5lb12oz respectively. At 39 weeks they will be 6lb12oz and 7lb1oz respectively. I think that's a good size for twins - and they will be healthy. Don't stress over this. Their vitals are good and they are moving as expected. You just maybe need to eat more - did you buy that book yet? Dr. Barbara Luke is the author of "When You're Expecting Twins, Triplets, or Quads". She has food and caloric intake recommendations for every stage of pregnancy - you may want to check it out.

I'm with BWUB - it's time for pasta, steak, thai, egg mcmuffins, etc.

    Take care.

  4. NO! You're NOT going to lose your babies. They're ripe, cooked, just about ready to come out of the oven. And if they're a bit small, so what?! I was 5 lbs. at birth and healthier than most kids I grew up with and I'm an average 5' 5" today. All my parts are fine (well, except my eggs but that's just 'cause I'm old! :)

Now...get off the PC and grab a juicy burger with cheese AND onion rings and a thick chocolate shake. Doctors orders!

  5. I wish doctors would mind their tongues and not stress already stressed out pregnant women any further.

Frankly, telling you that she "thinks the babies are small" provides no useful information whatsoever.

If she did not express concern beyond her feeble proclamation about their size, you should not worry either.

I think it's prudent, especially in the 3rd trimester of any pregnancy to rest, drink your fluids and fuel your body to feed the babies. Do right by yourself and you will do right by them.

Exhale and remember to breathe. Both you and babies will be fine.

  6. I think everything will be fine. I had my twins at 32 weeks, 4 days so you are definitely in the "safe zone" if something were to happen. C was 4 lbs 9 oz and K was 3 lbs 15 oz and I was told by many of the nurses they were a good size for their age. Just get lots of rest and take it easy!

  7. Hang in there hon - there is a definate margin of error on those u/s! So eat healthfully and try not to stress. You are doing great, and soon you'll be meeting those little monkeys!
