What do you think ?

I feel like I'm missing out on my kids early years just a bit too much. If I am home then I am in recovery from another day in 'Survivor' office! Seriously, that place is so dreadful.

Anyway.

I have worked out how much I would have to earn as a freelancer to make the same money as I presently make. I also worked out a 'float'  business model where based on series of small retainers that run over a 12 month period we float our family finances. I also reached out to some old colleagues to as for their advice about the whole thing. Our financial advisor has looked over everything and confirmed the numbers.

Am I really considering  this? Setting up a company of my own? Working FROM HOME which fills me with utter joy and longing. I would spend time with my kids. I would work on interesting projects. I would not be where I am now.  Walking away from security, even if it is miserable security?

I could even do the one thing that I have been dreaming about since I had the kids and set up a group home pre-school class. I would help the teacher whenever I could which, lets face it, if you're at home...

It feels so risky. But actually the right thing.

Oh I don't know.

What do you think?

  2. DO IT!!!! You will be so much happier and following the path of your own happiness. Also all that cortisol from endless work stress and anger is way bad for your health! Your kids will love you for it!!!
PS tell us about your dramatic quitting scene, please!

Given that, YES go for it! :)

  4. I am so impressed that you went beyond the phase of contemplation (where I always get stuck) to actually developing, crunching numbers, networking and even consulting with your financial person about all of this. My dear, you have a solid PLAN! Risky? Of course. Anything worth anything is. But you yourself said it feels like the right thing. That's your answer. In the worst case scenario, you flop. You'll be out of a "job" right? Um, just like you were last year? So, you'd pick yourself up and find another (yeah, I know, easier said than done). But I'll say to you what my DH said to me the night I came home and told him I'd been laid off from my high-power, high-paying, high-stress job: "Liberating, isn't it?" Grab your dream while you can, EB. Some of us will never have so much as the opportunity.

  5. If you have health insurance worked out, and plenty of savings to cushion you, then go for it. You only get one life, and your kids will only be little for a very short time. You only get to do this once. Make the most of it. And really, where there is a will, there is a way. If you can believe it, you can achieve it. Kind-of-cheesy American sayings, but they just happen to be true. If you think you can, then you can, and that's really all there is to it. I know that you are British, though, so you probably don't believe that. :)

Best of luck with your final decision!

  6. Undeniably, do it. What do you have to lose? You can always go back. I'd be more afraid of where you'll be in a year if you don't do it.

    Early congrats!
